The death of a 5-year-old migrant boy in a Chicago shelter has raised concerns about living conditions and medical care for asylum-seekers.

The boy, Jean Carlos Martinez, suffered a medical emergency and died shortly after arriving at Comer Children’s Hospital. Six others from the same shelter were hospitalized.

While the cause of death is pending, there are worries about potential outbreaks in crowded shelters. About 2,300 people, including many migrants, are staying at the shelter, a former warehouse. Reports of faulty heat, water leaks, and crowded conditions have prompted criticism.

Chicago is transitioning from using police stations for migrant housing but faces challenges with shelter conditions. Medical professionals express concerns about the healthcare system and the risk of infections. The city has instituted a 60-day limit for shelters, prompting evictions next month.

Despite partnerships for medical care, some argue that the city hasn’t done enough to provide basic care. The incident has intensified scrutiny on the treatment of migrants arriving in the city.
